AVEVA E3D IFC Revision Comparison for Plant and EPC Projects
Plant and EPC projects produce large amounts of model information, but the people reviewing progress do not always work in the native AVEVA E3D database.
IFC can become a useful neutral delivery layer.
Once multiple IFC exports exist, they can also become a revision-history dataset.
The EPC question is not only “what is in the model?”
Engineering management often needs to know:
- what changed since the last issue;
- which discipline gained content;
- whether major equipment appeared or disappeared;
- whether pipework is still changing heavily;
- whether structural content is stabilising;
- whether a late revision contains extensive rework.
A multi-revision IFC comparator can extract this evidence from repeated E3D exports.
AVEVA engineering information
AVEVA E3D exports can retain source-specific engineering attributes such as DBREF, OWNER and TYPE.
Those attributes are valuable because plant engineering identity does not always map neatly to a generic IFC class hierarchy.
Using source information helps the comparator interpret model content in a way that is closer to the original engineering structure.
The current Model Bridge development uses AVEVA-aware logic before generating KPI categories and comparison results.
Pipework, equipment and structure
For plant projects, broad engineering categories already provide useful management information.
A revision history can show development of:
- PIPE;
- EQUI;
- STRUCT;
- other represented engineering content.
A detailed report can then identify the actual objects behind a large increase or decrease.
The high-level graph and engineering object list therefore serve different users.
A Project Engineering Manager may begin with the trend.
A piping or BIM specialist may investigate the object-level details.
Why GUID-only comparison can be risky
Stable IFC GlobalIds are helpful, but engineering workflows should not assume perfect identity preservation.
Exports can change, modelling structures can be rebuilt, and source-system identifiers may provide important context.
For AVEVA, DBREF and hierarchy-related information can be especially useful when evaluating engineering continuity between revisions.
Model Bridge therefore treats IFC identity as an engineering matching problem rather than a purely syntactic one.
EPC design progress versus construction progress
The comparator is intended to analyse design model evolution.
It should not be confused with physical construction-progress measurement.
A rising pipework count does not automatically mean that the piping discipline is contractually a corresponding percentage complete.
It means that the delivered IFC contains more represented pipework content.
Combined with project planning and engineering knowledge, this becomes a useful evidence layer.
A focused desktop workflow
Large EPC organisations already use powerful coordination platforms.
A smaller comparator can still be valuable when a user needs a rapid independent analysis of a delivery set.
Typical workflow:
1. Select the AVEVA E3D IFC revisions.
2. Let the comparator reconstruct chronology.
3. Review category-level KPI trends.
4. Inspect added/deleted/modified objects.
5. Export HTML or Excel evidence.
6. Use the findings in the engineering review.
The objective is not to replace AVEVA E3D or a project CDE.
It is to create a focused analytical bridge from IFC deliveries to understandable revision evidence.
Future: all IFC models of the EPC project
The larger opportunity is project-wide.
An EPC project may receive many IFC packages from different disciplines, vendors and subcontractors.
In the future, the same revision logic could analyse each package separately and aggregate them into a project-level dashboard.
That could provide a direct model-based KPI showing how the total represented 3D project develops through time.
This future concept is especially attractive for EPC because engineering work is naturally distributed across many packages and authoring systems.
