The difficult step is not always scanning or modelling. It is the unowned preparation work between them.

A workflow that looks simple on paper

Industrial projects are often summarized as:

Scanning -> registration and treatment -> E57 -> point-cloud manager -> 3D modelling

Every component exists, so the workflow appears complete. In practice, a large gap remains between a registered source dataset and the smaller, organized context that individual designers actually need.

Where the bottleneck forms

The source file may contain an entire unit, building, plant area, or survey campaign. A designer may need only one corridor, equipment zone, level, or discipline-specific area. Without a dedicated preparation layer, teams repeatedly perform manual cropping, conversion, project splitting, and file distribution.

The result is daily friction rather than one dramatic failure:

  • heavy files are opened more often than necessary;
  • several users repeat similar preparation work;
  • subsets are difficult to reproduce consistently;
  • hardware requirements spread to every workstation;
  • engineering starts later because data preparation remains informal.

The missing responsibility

This step is not scanner registration, because the scans are already registered. It is not modelling, because no CAD object has yet been created. It belongs between reality capture and engineering production, which is why it is often handled as an improvised task rather than as a controlled system.

A narrow tool can solve an expensive problem

Why registered E57 data still needs preparation before CAD modelling

A registered E57 is often the correct project master file, but “registered” does not mean “optimised for every downstream task”. Designers may need only one floor, one process unit, one pipe-rack zone or a limited vertical range.

Preparing those work packages before modelling creates clearer handover boundaries and reduces the need for every workstation to carry the complete point-cloud context.
